BERNICE FENWICK MARTIN

Impressionism

Bernice Fenwick Martin was born on July 7, 1902 in Shelbourne, Ontario. In the 1920s and 30s, she studied at the Ontario College of Art under J. W. Beatty and Franklin Carmichael. Her canvases were exhibited in the Royal Canadian Academy shows of 1945 and 1947.

As a painter and graphic artist, her subjects include landscapes, market scenes, village life, and still life. Her work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada.

Bernice Fenwick Martin’s paintings are becoming increasingly appreciated as remembrances of a time and place in Ontario, forever gone but beautifully recorded. Examples of her work are currently exhibited at the Kipling Gallery and available for purchase. Acquisitions of these make for an impressive beginning or addition to any collection of original and historical Canadian art.
